Oh boy what a long day!
Our day started with a crazy 415am wake up call. We had to be at pre-op by 6am, which meant leaving my parents house by 5am to make sure we are not rushed.
Pre-op went great. Just vitals and making sure she looks good. Wiped her down with some special warm wipes and got her in her gown with a fresh diaper. After pre-op we took her to a surgery holding area to meet the whole surgery team before handing her over. Once she was in the nurses arms I immediately wanted to take her back and run.
The wait during surgery was actually not bad. My friend alicia was there and her, Joe and myself played phase 10 to pass the time. We received 3 phone calls during everything so that helped a lot. It went a lot quicker than any of us were expecting. We met with the surgeons afterwards real quick, and the answered a few questions.
We got to see Rooster about 30 minutes later in recovery, and she looked a lot better than I thought. The swelling was still light, as was the bruising. From the PACU we went over to PICU where we would settle in for the day. PICU is no joke, it doesn't look to bad, but it drains you. When we got here she still had everything necessary hooked up to her, and I just wanted to hold her and snuggle her all day. Joe and I did decide not to hold her today, only because she was sleeping so well that it wasn't necessary to wake her for our benefit.
After a while we started taking turns with the family that was here for her so they could all spend some time with her. Over the course of the day the bruising and swelling has gotten slightly worse, but we have been warned the swelling will get worse. Joe and I have gotten to eat, and as I type he is sleeping while I 'stand guard' to a semi restless Rooster.
I will say this, she is totally herself. She has been awake some tonight and its reassuring to see her acting like her laid back self, just with closed eyes. She knows Joe and I are here, and she will hold us so tight you have to pry her off your hand/finger to switch. We played her favorite song 50 times on repeat as a soother.
Tomorrow, hopefully she will go to her regular room out on the floor and out of PICU. We have also heard her gauze on her head should come off tomorrow as well.
It is so hard seeing her like this, but I'm doing my best to hold it together and know that this is just what God planned for her and us. She will return to her normal spitfire of a self within time and we will remember this day as Noggin Day 2012 and one that basically saved her life.
We have had an outpouring of love from family and friends and friends of friends. The thoughts and prayers from everyone have been heard. God is good! He looked after Rooster during surgery and all day today and I know that he will continue to do so.
So, as I said before Noggin Day 2012 will always be remembered. :)
So glad it went well! She's such a gorgeous little girl. Thanks for sharing.
